It is with great sadness that Christchurch Metro Cricket learnt of the passing of New Brighton Cricket stalwart and Christchurch Metro cricket Life Member Derek Burrell.
Derek was unanimously voted in as a CMCA Life Member at the AGM in october following over forty years service to cricket in Christchurch.
Derek joined the Sydenham Cricket club in the early 1970’s before moving to New Brighton in 1980. He played for the Senior A team for over 20 years. For 11 seasons he captained the Suburban Representative team, and when he finished playing, he became a representative selector. He has held a number of positions on the New Brighton committee.
Since his passing, the tributes have flowed in from former team mates, opponents and players with who he has mentored and coached durnig their own development.
Christchurch Metro cricket sends its sincere condolances to the Burrell family.
