KiwiSport is a New Zealand Government funding initiative to support sport for school-aged children. Christchurch Metro Cricket has linked with both Sport Canterbury and the Canterbury Cricket Association to provide an eight week fundamental skills programme for primary school children in Years 4-8. Fundamental skills are just one of the categories covered by the Kiwisport programme.
Programmes are delivered across the entire Canterbury West Coast region and fit into a fundamental sports skills framework under the various categories. The programme is structured to ensure delivery can occur in both primary schools and community facilities such as clubs. Schools are able to select a cricket delivery option.
1. Coordination and delivery of the fundamentals sports skills programme (up to 8 skill sessions) to primary school children throughout the Canterbury West Coast Region. All programmes will be inclusive of children with disabilities.
2. Inclusion of teacher professional development and coach education within the fundamentals sports skills context.
3. Recruitment and training of fundamental skills coaches.
4. The translation of skill development into participation in sport in a school or club setting.
